Overall, Sonic Mania is probably one of the best Sonic games ever made and is a very carefully and thoughtfully crafted game. It is very much a return to form when it comes to the older games and if that isn’t for you then you may want to play something else. The only real caveat with Sonic Mania is an obvious one, if you did not enjoy the old Sonic games on the Mega Drive and Genesis then you won’t enjoy Sonic Mania. Coming in at $19.99, it feels both fair and reasonable for a game of this scope and size. The really good news with all this is that Sega got the price point spot on for this game. In a functional sense, the PS4 and Switch versions play very similarly so it is really down to your game playing preference. That said, it really depends on what you prefer in terms of how to play the game. However, from a sheer convenience point of view, I prefer the Switch release as it allows me to dip in and out of the game wherever I want.Ĭonsidering that Sonic Mania is such a focused game based on its replay value, being able to play it in short bursts repeatedly feels very natural. Both run very smoothly and come equally recommended on that front. Of the versions released of Sonic Mania, I have played the Switch and PS4 iterations. In addition to the main story mode, you also have time attack and a split-screen competition mode available and there is even a Puyo Puyo themed mini-game you can unlock. The Blue Sphere bonus stages from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are also present and on successful completion with enough medals, unlock stuff like a sound test and debug mode. If you manage to attain all the Chaos Emeralds then you gain access to the real ending of the game as well as Sonic’s final transformation. Upon successful completion of these, you will unlock that Chaos Emerald. Finding giant rings in each stage takes you to mini-games that hark back to the likes of Sonic CD, where you chase a UFO carrying a Chaos Emerald. Obviously, I am aware that there is already a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 but Sonic Mania feels closer to what that game should have been if Sega hadn't forgotten the lineage of the series.ĭespite a few irritating bosses, the game is not overly long but is heavily built around replay value. While Sonic Mania clearly riffs off Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the game feels closer to a real Sonic the Hedgehog 4 but in line with the games when they were on the Mega Drive and Genesis. The bonus stages from older 'Sonic' games are also present in 'Sonic Mania'.
