![]() Sure, Bahubali supports her as the independent woman that she is, but her idiosyncratic stances on causes that matter to her, and her dialogues are all so defining (and relatable to the recent feminist uprising), it will be harder to not understand why she is the cinema character of the year. However, if I had to choose one star who shines like the greatest of all, it is Shetty, with her electric performance as Devasena. Same goes for Daggubati as the classic villain. His nuanced performances as Shiva and Bahubali - two characters with little difference - can be counted as one of the biggest defining factors of the franchise's success. Prabhas is magnificent in his portrayal as the hero of the people, and puts up a tireless show in both the films. I cannot imagine anyone else playing these characters with such finesse and fidelity. He directs his cast well, and in order to describe them, we must first appreciate the casting. Director Rajamouli's storytelling should be lauded, and film students may want to take notes. Weighing these issues with the grandeur and volumes of melodrama makes us reach to a conclusion which is slightly positive, only if you consider the entertainment value. Why the characters do not succumb to their injuries may be retorted by mythological and religious references, but for a learned viewer, there are going to be issues with the film. The degree of implausibility blows through the roof, yet it's the heroism that comes to the rescue in every single frame. Having said that, there cannot be any excuse to the substandard CGI that is at show here. Also, there is this faint sampling of didacticism swaying around in the plot - whether it is trying to erect a feminist character like Devasena or showcasing the brutal kingdom affairs of the bygone era or the sexist nature of things - the pedagogical element is present, making the film overwhelming to some. As is evident from the loads of social media mentions lauding both of these characters' authenticity and idealism, if there is one thing that you will take away from the Bahubali films, it is the virtues that these characters adopt and explicitly endorse. ![]() Romance between Bahubali and Devasena is strictly martial, but is still palpable to our hungry senses. On that front, it is imperative that we give the makers full marks for efforts and storytelling. ![]() While Bahubali 1 banked on structural storytelling and a pretentious climax to hook its viewers, Bahubali 2 uses more firepower and style. Starting from the opening credits, which poses as a prologue and a visual narration of the first part so that you can brush up, to the high-octane stunts that defy logic and science to derive magic, the good old melodrama, and an obvious yet satisfying answer to the eternal question derived from part one's climax. There is enough substance for an average film-goer to look at and appreciate here. It is up to Shiva to bring back the kingdom's glory by doing what is right: unshackle Devasena, his mother, and take back what is lawfully his. How things take a swift turn to what led to the events in the first part is what essentially the first two hours of this film is. What ensues is a game of shifting, smarmy egos and value of integrity between Bahubali and his aunt, Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan), whom he regards as his mother. It's a ploy actually, which he masterminds with help from his crippled father, Bijjaladeva (Nassar). Bahubali, with ample help from Kattappa, fool around with Devasena, as humor and borderline slapstick enter the concoction (but do not stay for long), which soon shifts to high drama as the lover boy's brother, Bhallaladeva, now has his eyes on Devasena. Predictability is all over the place as you follow the flashback story involving Bahubali (Prabhas), who uses a method previously sampled by the protagonist in the 2005 Tamil film "Ghajini", to woo Devasena (Anushka Shetty), the fiery queen of a nearby smaller kingdom. Shiva (Prabhas), upon realizing his lineage, has to save the kingdom now and settle some scores. Resuming exactly where the first part ends, the story follows king- slave Kattappa's (Sathya Raj) narration of the past events that occurred in the Mahishmati kingdom and how they directly led to its degeneration under the rule of the foxy and narcissistic Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati). This epic romantic drama, which is South Indian director S S Rajamouli's eleventh feature film, has the combined effect of all these factors, but is unsurprisingly let down by lack of logic. The frenzy and thirst for more that the first part started and caused in 2015 had to be quenched by content that has more power, more action, and more grandeur. ![]() The scene between Gill and Whittaker’s hologram message was touching, and Kevin McNally’s Jericho made a great foil for the dynamic between Yaz and Dan (John Bishop). The hermit in Nepal issuing a string of dad jokes, and Karnavista’s exasperation after they went to all that trouble to get a message to him, were amusing – but these sequences also made it clear that Yaz (Mandip Gill) had taken charge of the team in the absence of the Doctor. Like something out of Jules Verne, Indiana Jones or Tintin, their worldwide quest to decipher an ancient inscription gave us action as well as laughs. My favourite strand of the episode was the adventure of Yaz, Dan and Jericho in 1904. Kevin McNally’s Jericho helped bring some levity to this episode. The scenes between the Doctor and Tecteun were tense, but neither we nor the Doctor know enough about this character – whom we have seen previously only in brief flashback sequences – for it to have real bite. We now know that Division started as a secret way for Time Lords to interfere in the development of the universe and has grown and spread to encompass more species and an ever-expanding mission – one they want to take to other universes, burning ours behind them as they leave.īarbara Flynn’s character was revealed to be Tecteun, the Gallifreyan who found the Timeless Child and stole its genetic secret of regeneration for the Time Lords. What you thought of the episode will depend very much on whether or not you care for the Timeless Child arc. ![]() However, on the whole, I think chapter five of Flux went on to swerve the worst of that regular pitfall of the Chris Chibnall era, serving up multiple interesting threads, gradually bringing the characters together and hopefully setting us up nicely for the resolution next week. ![]() T his chapter opened with a monologue in which Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor talked rapidly, explaining everything to the audience while up against a CGI background of a million Weeping Angels, and my heart sank again.

Particularly reminiscent of the Cherokee myth of Nun’Yunu’Wi, which is a monster in human form with skin like stone. Note: I don’t believe this is a real god, but I do think Neil Gaiman intended this as a sort of Indigenous tribe worshipping animals, the land, et cetera. "Escape from the City" doesn’t shy away from that. Life is inexplicable and unknowable, and sometimes all you can do is keep running forward. But these lines only help to make the song even more relatable to Sega’s gotta-go-fast mascot. At one point, the vocalists cry out, "Got no other options - only one thing to do!" The repeating internal monologue of "Must keep on moving ahead no time for guessing, follow my plan instead" also speaks to something more nefarious than the outward positivity. The resounding message is hopeful, but there are some darker moments. Not all of it is sunshine and rainbows, though. It’s full of optimism at its catchiest and most assertive. Despite it scoring a stressful level - Sonic’s on the run from the military and a massive truck, remember? - the song is self-assured, confident and affirming. "Escape from the City" is overwhelmingly positive. "Got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow" is the next line, and that’s when the song’s thesis statement becomes apparent. "Rolling around at the speed of sound," the song begins, kicking things off with a simple but unforgettable rhyme. You cannot ignore the beautiful, ethereal lyrics.įor one, they’re instantly charming. The early-‘00s pop-rock music of "Escape From the City" is great, but the song would not work without its words. If there’s any promise for Sonic the Hedgehog to be great, it’s on display in this level, and especially in this song. To not understand the appeal of "City Escape" is, in our opinion, to not understand the appeal of Sonic at all. It’s the music, it’s the dumb one-liners, it’s the Soap Shoes ads and product placement. ![]() In fact, everything about this level encapsulates the Sonic ‘tude perfectly. But there’s no denying that the pounding beat and frenetic energy of the song work perfectly to drive you through the level.Īnd besides, if there’s any musical styling that perfectly captures the mix of family-friendly and edgy that Sonic personifies, it’s bubblegum rock. Maybe you don’t like the pop-punk leanings of "Escape from the City." That would be fair. The game opens with this surprise that acts as an immediate shot of adrenaline. Songs with a full lyrical treatment, songs that sound like something you might hear on the local pop radio station are still rare in games today in 2001, they were essentially unheard of. And its magnificent theme is a major reason why. But it’s hard to recall the rest of Sonic Adventure 2, obfuscated as it is by Knuckles’ dumb puzzles and Tails’ stupid attempts at a third-person shooter.īut "City Escape" - man, "City Escape" is unforgettable. We’ve played it like it was a part-time job. ![]() We’ve put well over 100 hours into the game. Certainly none of them come close to the level of pure, perfect, high-speed action that "City Escape" achieves. It’s hard to remember if any of the other levels in Sonic Adventure 2 are any good. The rest is devoted to annoying gem fetch quests or awful mech segments starring Sonic’s friends and enemies. You don’t just play as Sonic, pushing the speed limit in dozens of levels in fact, Sonic’s parts make up just a sixth of the game. ![]() For a certain vocal subset of Sonic fans, the game brought on the end of an era in the series. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the case. It’s infinitely replayable, too - we’ve run through the course hundreds of times, at least once in under two minutes flat.Īs the introduction to Sonic Adventure 2, "City Escape" seems to suggest that you’re in for a very good, very Sonic-like time. Oh, and at the very end, Sonic has to outrun the world’s biggest 18-wheeler. Y’know what Sonic made that snowboard out of? The side of a military helicopter that had held him hostage until he bust out of it in mid-air. It’s fast-paced, full of secret pathways and more than a little absurd. "City Escape" represents the epitome of Sonic the Hedgehog. That level is called, appropriately, "City Escape," and it’s fantastic right from the start, where Sonic falls from a military chopper onto the world’s steepest highway, which he blasts down (at the speed of sound) on a makeshift snowboard. "Escape from the City" is the theme to the opening level of Sonic Adventure 2, the hedgehog’s final outing on Sega Dreamcast. ![]() To understand why this song qualifies as a masterpiece, you need to know its context. The game's new Endwalker expansion raises the level cap from 80 to 90, as well as introduces two new jobs for players to master alongside new regions to explore and dungeons to conquer. Square Enix did anticipate the game's current server woes. So, make yourself at home and let us see what we both know: This post is dedicated to the amazing guy (ops guess who doesn't know how to mention users), right there In this post, you get the thread's main gallery (behind the Spoiler tabs!) with some of the gathered pre-release media, hopefully explained with the proper precision. So, today, I invite you to share some of your favorite beta pictures of The Sims, in case you're also keen on this subject and have something to offer! Gonna be precious for my personal research, haha. This other one, shot months or weeks before the release of the final version, shows the game almost in the way we're used to see but with some minor changes, like the plumbob behavior (which doesn't seem to spin at all?), the way how the shade of the objects change a little once the mouse hover it, the Sims talking whilst one of them hold a platter and, more impressively, if I'm not mistaken, the Buy Mode song sounds a bit different, too. Shows the characters in a more "cartoon-ish" shape (except the twins), the rubber plant seen in a different perspective and an ARROW taking the place the plumbob does these days! Also, do note the voice acting (like when the man tells the woman a joke) seemed way more uninspired and inexpressive than it is in the final game, almost sounding like muttering ![]() This seems to be the oldest Sims gameplay footage (1999) we've got available on the interwebs so far, and it's probably shot in, more or less, the same time the picture above was. Reflective of its innovative and somewhat experimental nature, TONS of things have changed during the building of the first The Sims and because of that it is always interesting and even intriguing to observe the differences between the oldest pictures/videos of it (1996-1999's) until February 2000 and its been, let's say, one of my favorite obsessions and hobbies haha (And it seems even toddlers and children are, because they've got that weird bug that they stretch out like the game's trying to animate them as adults.) On the other hand, Sims Mobile still has a cleaner interface than this.Sims 1 Beta discussion/Pre-Release Sims Footage Pics Pretty much everything you'll see in a Sims Mobile home is converted from Sims 4. (Kind of makes all the kids' stuff they put in the game feel pointless.) It's funny to consider, because Sims Mobile actually uses a lot of Sims 4 assets for furniture and stuff. There's some interaction you can do with them, but otherwise it progresses from baby to toddler to child and then poof, adult, where you can finally add it to the family. When you have a kid, you can't control it. Make an adult Sim, they have careers, hobbies, relationships, and while the neighborhoods are kind of "open," they're 1-3 lots each, small lots, so basically instanced. Sims 4 might have done a little more, mainly because it was working with PCs, but the core concepts are there. ![]() If you want to see a good representation of what Sims 4 was likely going to be, check out Sims Mobile. Don't need to have as many life stages or put as much effort into them when people will spend most of their time as a young adult. Story progression is irrelevant when pretty much everyone's supposed to be a PC. ![]() Terrain tools and things like CASt would be potentially problematic as it'd mean more info to store in a server somewhere and someone else might have a harder time loading your lot. Instanced lots are what you'd expect for an online game. While those things went away and the interface got streamlined a good bit along the way, you can still tell where it was being developed one way and flipped the other (I mean, aside from some of the online code still being in the game, and the way it's coded to act like it's talking to a server). It was being developed as an online game, which is why at that point you had things like icons for mail, chat, and friends. ![]() The Germans had expressed their belief that the war would be over soon, and that they were reluctant to continue fighting. In Jul 1918, during the Second Battle of the Marne, the I Corps commander, Lt Gen Hunter Liggett found that, although the 26th Division did not lack for heroism and fought valiantly, he could not depend on its commanders, especially Edwards, to subjugate his unit to Regular Army divisions.Įdwards’ final demise came in Oct 1918, when he reported an incident to Liggett involving information two of his soldiers had obtained from German soldiers with whom they had been fraternizing. Bullard was enraged, but Pershing always favored the 1st Division and reassured him, and nothing came of the incident. Edwards found fault with everything he saw, and accused the 1st Division of leaving behind classified documents. Edwards made another enemy in Maj Gen Robert Lee Bullard during the 26th Division’s relief of the 1st Division near Toul in Apr 1918. ‘Blackjack’ Pershing, Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) on the Western Front, particularly despised him. Going back to his days at West Point, Edwards had earned a reputation for being sharp-tongued and contentious. The division also became the first complete American and became the first to go into combat for 46 consecutive days at the Chemin-des-Dames in France in Feb 1918. ![]() The division, an Army National Guard formation, arrived on the Western Front in Sep 1917, the first complete American division to do so. In Aug 1917, four months after the American entry into the war, he was promoted to the rank of major general in the National Army and given the task of organizing the 26th Division. Upon the outbreak of WW-1, Edwards was in charge of the Department of the Northeast, comprising all the New England states. Maj GenClarence Ransom Edwards (– Feb 14, 1931) was a senior United States Army officer, known as the first Chief of the Bureau of Insular Affairs, and commander of the 26th Division in World War I. On August 13 1917, after the United States declared war on Germany, their ranks were augmented and together they formed the 26th Infantry Division. Most of these units were on the Mexican Border, during the trouble with Mexico in 1916. Such was the background of part of the troops that made up the New England National Guards on the eve of the First World War. During the Spanish American War, they again took to the field at Santiago. They played their pipes at Manassas, sounded the charge at Antietam and Chancellorsville and sang Garryowen in Glory at Mechanicsville as, heavily outnumbered, they held off Stonewall Jackson’s men. The 101st Infantry Regiment was originally designated the Massachusetts 9th Infantry and was first organized from a nucleus of Boston fighting Irishmen in 1861, during the Civil War. Later, generations of these New Englanders took part in the War of 1812, and every great American conflict since. Their descendants took part in the siege of Boston in 1776 as Minute Men. ![]() The oldest of the Yankee Division’s three infantry regiments, the 104th, stems back to the Springfield Train Band and Hampshire County Regiments whose troops served through the French and Indian Wars. Battery A of the 101st Field Artillery was one of the original artillery units in the Army and won fame as Battery Jones during the Civil War in fighting through the Wilderness, Petersburg, Cold Harbor and Richmond. Ancestors of the 101st Engineers unfurled the first American flag on Prospect Hill during the Revolutionary War. The 102nd Field Artillery Battalion traces its origin to one of the oldest military organizations in America, the Gloucester Militia. The lineage of the Yankee Division extends back to the beginning of the American citizen-soldier – the fighting colonial troops of the early Plymouth and Massachusetts colonies.
